This structure was completed by Archibald Van Deren in October 1874. Van Deren was one of the three original County Commissioners when Gilpin County was formed in 1861, and was a Grand Master Mason at age 33. The dry goods store run by Sessler and Sauer operated on the first floor of the building. The second floor held offices for Western Union, a physician, and a dentist.
