Georgia Historical Marker: Conyers First United Methodist Church
-
Originally the Conyers Methodist Episcopal Church, now Conyers First United Methodist Church, was founded in 1852. Alexander Hamilton Stephens, vice-president of the (Southern) Confederate States of America spoke here before the election of 1856. This church and Conyers Presbyterian Church, which relocated to 911 Main Street in 1880, known as "sidewalk churches," previously held joint services with First Baptist Church of Conyers that was previously located at what is now known as the Rockdale Auditorium at 903 Main Street.
