The Amador Hotel is one of Las Cruces' most treasured historic landmark buildings. Prominent trader Martin Amador built the hotel in stages between the 1860s and 1880s. The Amador has served many roles, in addition to being an active hotel for almost one hundred years. Martin Amador opened his lobby for county government proceedings, as well as many a dance and social events. His family ran the hotel until the late 1960s. In 1969, Citizens Bank of Las Cruces acquired and transformed the Amador Hotel into the bank headquarters, adding an extension to the east side of the original building. Dona Ana County acquired the Amador Hotel in 1983 to house the county manager's office. In 2007, when county government moved out, the city government accepted ownership of the building. Now the Amador Hotel Foundation leads the effort to preserve and restore the Amador Hotel.
