The Women's Improvement Association established the town's first park in 1894. The WIA's old clunhouse still tsands to the east of the Pioneer Women's Park. This building served as the town's library and as a center of the club's many civic activities. Now known as the Alameda-Deepot Historic District, the surrounding neighborhood slowly rose up after the 1881 arrival of the railroad in Las Cruces. The Prairie-style houses and open yards in this neighborhood are far more Midwestern the Southwestern.
