Welcome to historic Central City! Gold was discovered here in 1859 by John H. Gregory, sparking a gold rush that brought tens of thousands of fortune seekers to this area. In 1874, a fire destroyed most of the Central City business district, with only a few fireproof buildings remaining from the earliest days of settlement.
Most of the buildings you will see in the historic downtown were constructed in 1874 and 1875, just after the fire. Central City has the second-largest number of historic resources in the state of Colorado, and was named a National Historic Landmark District in 1961.
